A freak accident in Volusia County on Monday night, January 16, left a 33-year-old Jacksonville woman dead. The woman was a passenger in a Ford Explorer driving south on Interstate 95 about 8:45 p.m. According to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a tire fell out of the back of a truck trailer ahead of the Ford Explorer and the vehicle couldn’t avoid hitting the tire. The Explorer went out of control and rolled over, then went off the road and hit a tree. Three passengers inside the Explorer were all wearing seat belts, but a female passenger was killed and the 35-year-old driver suffered minor injuries. A third passenger, a 46-year-old man, was taken to Halifax General Hospital in critical condition.
There is no word in this story from the Florida Times-Union whether any charges will be filed against the pickup truck driver for not properly securing his load in the trailer. An investigation by the FHP is ongoing.
