Elderly Couple Critical After Crash with Teen Driver in Palm Beach County

By Florida Auto Accident Attorney on December 19, 2011

An elderly couple from Boynton Beach is in intensive care following a collision with a teen driver who ran a red light west of Boynton Beach. The Boynton Beach Sheriff’s Office responded to the auto accident December 7 at the corner of Old Boynton Beach Road and Military Trail.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that a southbound Ford SUV ran a stop light on Military Trail and smashed into the 2009 Hyundai driven by an 85-year-old man with his wife, age 82, in the passenger seat. The SUV ran into the right side of the passenger car and the couple was taken to Delray Medical Center and put in intensive care. The SUV driver, age 18, suffered minor injuries. Drug and alcohol tests have been conducted on the teen driver to see if he was driving under the influence, according to the sheriff’s office.

Intersection Accidents

An intersection is a very common place to experience an accident because one or both parties believe they can pass through a light before it turns red. It happens every day. These can also be high speed collisions as someone may be rushing to make the light. The high number of intersection accidents is one reason that red-light runner cameras have been installed at various intersections around Florida.

The Driving Institute of America believes over 40 percent of fatalities resulting from car crashes are the result of a failure to yield the right of way, driving through a stop sign, or running a traffic light.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a traffic accident, a consultation with an experienced Florida intersection accident lawyer is just a phone call away at (800) 533-3555. Five Hospitalized After Three-Car Collision on Southside

By Florida Auto Accident Attorney on September 29, 2010

A three-car collision Thursday morning, September 16, has left five Jacksonville commuters hospitalized.

The initial crash happened on southbound Southside Boulevard at Ivey Road at about 8 a.m. The first vehicle was waiting at a light at an intersection when another vehicle came up from behind and hit it.

In all, three other vehicles were affected. Before it was all over one car burned completely, another car burned in the front and the third in the rear. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office the collision and subsequent fire sent five people to the hospital for treatment. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.

Traffic was backed up for several hours as the southbound lanes were completely closed and traffic was rerouted onto a service road until 11 a.m.

The driver of the initial vehicle has been cited for careless driving.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries that resulted from this Florida intersection car collision.

While it is unclear from the First Coast News article what caused the initial crash, investigators will undoubtedly begin with witness interviews and by checking the cell phone records of all of the drivers involved.

Southside Boulevard is a known hazard area with motorists speeding, talking on their cell phones and cutting off other drivers. But with little evidence that the second driver even tried to stop before hitting the first vehicle, texting or distracted driving could be at the top of the list of the investigation.

Virginia Tech researchers found texting while behind the wheel increased the risk of a crash or near-crash event 23.2 times when compared to the non-distracted driver.

Florida continues to be one of a shrinking pool of states whose legislature continues to refuse to pass some sort of texting or cell phone ban.

Jacksonville auto accident attorneys would like to remind all motorists to be safe and refrain from using a cell phone when driving a motor vehicle.

Lakeland Crash Takes Second Life

By Florida Auto Accident Attorney on September 20, 2010

A second person has died from injuries received in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday, September 8 in Lakeland, Florida, according to The Ledger. Laverne Charles Schaub, 76, of Haines City, was southbound on South Florida Avenue when he made a left turn. By doing that, he put himself in the path of northbound traffic and crashed his 1988 Chevy Lumina into two pickups at South Florida and the Polk Parkway around noon.

His passenger, Jearlene Meeks Daughtry, 70, of Plant City died at the scene of the accident. Schaub also died on Thursday, September 9, from his injuries received in the three-vehicle wreck. The driver of a 2004 Dodge pickup truck pulling lawn equipment and his passenger were treated at the scene.

The second truck was being driven by Kathy Bishop, 52, of Waverly, who also had a passenger in the vehicle. They were both taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with injuries.

Law enforcement has been aided by witnesses who saw the crash and came forward to help with the investigation.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Ms. Daughtry and Mr. Schaub for their tragic accident.

Intersection Accidents
Intersection accidents happen every day and it is one of the most common locations for a car crash to occur. A light turning from yellow to red can encourage one party to go faster to make it through the light while the other driver believes it is clear. It’s estimated about one-third of all Florida car accidents occur at intersections.
