This news report in the Gainesville Sun does not say what caused a 24-year-old woman to suddenly drive off of a Levy County road Saturday, January 7, around 2 p.m. Attributing it only to a “medical condition,” the woman from Bronson and an eight-week-old boy were in her 1996 Nissan Sentra going southbound on County Road 337 at the Alachua County line. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports she ran off the road onto the east shoulder and collided with a culvert then a power pole; this caused the Nissan to rotate in a clockwise direction and rollover.
The baby was ejected from the vehicle, and the child and woman were taken to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville in serious condition. There is no word on the relationship between the woman and child or whether or not either one was using a seat belt or a child car restraint system.
Let’s pray for the survival of these two. An eight-week old baby has little control over his muscles and would be unable to prevent a spinal cord injury or traumatic head injury.
Child Car Seats
Auto accidents remain the leading cause of death for young people under the age of 12. Most of the time, the fatality occurs when the child is riding as a passenger in a motor vehicle and the proper restraint system is not used to keep the child safe. Under law, a Florida infant is supposed to be in an approved car seat strapped in using the rear seat belts and facing backward. According to federal statistics, every year about 1,800 children are killed in motor vehicles.
